Performance Max Updates: AI Max and Promotion Mode

Google Ads Management in Lincoln, CA Just Got More Interesting

For a few years, running a Performance Max campaign felt like handing Google your wallet, a photo of your business, and a note that said "do your best." It often worked. It was also nerve-racking, because you couldn't see where the money went or tell the machine what you didn't want.

2026 changed that. Google has been quietly adding real controls across Performance Max and Search campaigns: campaign-level negative keywords, channel reporting, AI Max for Search, and a new promotion mode that lets you plan a sale instead of babysitting it. The automation is still doing the heavy lifting. You just get a steering wheel now.

At Zora Nova, we manage Google Ads for small businesses across Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville, and Placer County, and these updates are the most practical ones we have seen in a while. Below is what changed, what it means for a local business, and how to use it without lighting your budget on fire. If you would rather skip the reading and just have it set up right, schedule a call with Zora Nova.

What Performance Max Is (and Why Local Businesses Were Nervous)

Performance Max is Google's goal-based campaign type. You give it a conversion goal, a budget, and a set of assets like headlines, images, and video, and it runs ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps from one campaign. Google's AI (artificial intelligence) decides the bidding, the placements, and which combination of your assets to show.

The upside is reach. A Rocklin remodeling company can show up in a search result, a YouTube pre-roll, and a Maps listing without building three campaigns. The downside, historically, was control. For a long time you couldn't add negative keywords, couldn't see which channel actually drove the leads, and couldn't tell whether your "plumber" ads were showing to people looking for plumbing jobs instead of plumbing help.

That is why plenty of Placer County business owners stuck with classic Search campaigns, where every keyword is a decision you made on purpose. Fair enough. The good news is that the gap between the two has narrowed a lot, which is what the rest of this post is about.

AI Max for Search Campaigns: Performance Max Thinking, Search Campaign Control

AI Max is the feature most people lump in with Performance Max, and it is easy to see why. Technically it lives inside standard Search campaigns, not Performance Max. Think of it as Google bringing the smartest parts of Performance Max over to the campaigns you already understand.

AI Max rolled out in beta in May 2025 and, according to Google's Ads and Commerce blog, moved out of beta in 2026 as the replacement for Dynamic Search Ads. It adds three things to a Search campaign:

  • Search term matching. Your keywords become the starting point, and Google's AI finds related searches you never thought to bid on. A Lincoln HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) company bidding on "AC repair" might also show for "house won't cool down Lincoln" without anyone adding that keyword.

  • Text customization. Google writes headline and description variations based on your landing page and existing ads, so your copy adapts to the search instead of staying frozen.

  • Final URL expansion. Google can send people to the most relevant page on your site, not just the one you picked, with controls to exclude pages you don't want in play.

It is not all-or-nothing. You can turn each piece on or off, keep brand controls so your ads don't blend into competitor searches, and review the AI-generated copy before you opt in. Google has also been nudging advertisers along. Campaigns using automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match were auto-upgraded starting September 1, 2026, and Dynamic Search Ads are scheduled to move over beginning February 2027.

For regulated businesses like mortgage brokers and medical offices, we recommend a careful rollout. Test AI Max on one campaign, read the search terms weekly, and keep a tight negative keyword list. For high-demand home services, it is often an easy win. Not sure which bucket you're in? Let Zora Nova review your Google Ads account.

Promotion Mode: Run a Sale Without Babysitting Your Budget

Every business owner who has ever run a holiday special knows the drill. You raise the budget, loosen the targets, and then forget to change them back until the January credit card statement arrives. Promotion mode is Google's answer to that.

Google announced promotion mode on June 15, 2026, as a beta for Search and Performance Max campaigns, alongside a wider rollout of Smart Bidding Exploration, according to Search Engine Journal's coverage of the announcement. You pick a promotion window, typically a few days to two weeks, and Google temporarily does two things:

  1. Loosens your efficiency target. If you bid to a target ROAS (return on ad spend) or target CPA (cost per acquisition), the campaign will accept a bit less efficiency in exchange for more volume while the promotion runs.

  2. Adds extra daily budget. Spend ramps faster so you capture the demand spike instead of hitting your cap by lunchtime.

When the window ends, everything reverts on its own. No sticky notes, no 2 a.m. logins. It works with regular daily budgets and with campaign total budgets, the fixed-spend option Google rolled out more broadly in early 2026.

This is different from seasonality adjustments, which only tell Smart Bidding to expect a temporary conversion-rate change. Promotion mode packages the dates, the budget boost, and the target tolerance into one scheduled event.

Who should care in Placer County? A Roseville retailer planning a Black Friday push. A Lincoln pool contractor opening spring bookings. An auto repair shop running a pre-winter brake special. A dental office with a whitening promotion. Anyone with a real, dated offer and a landing page that can handle the traffic.

Two cautions. It is still labeled beta, so it may not appear in every account yet. And "prioritize volume" means exactly that: expect a higher cost per lead during the window, and make sure the margin on the offer can absorb it. Planning a seasonal push? Zora Nova can build the campaign and the landing page together.

More Performance Max Controls Worth Turning On

AI Max and promotion mode get the attention, but a handful of quieter Performance Max updates matter just as much for a local service business.

Campaign-level negative keywords. You can now block searches directly inside a Performance Max campaign, with limits that match a regular Search campaign. For a Lincoln plumber, that means excluding "plumber jobs," "plumbing school," "DIY," and "free" so the budget goes to people who need a plumber today.

Channel performance reporting. You can finally see clicks, cost, and conversions split by Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. If 70 percent of spend is landing on Display and none of it converts, you now know, and you can fix the assets or the signals instead of guessing.

Search themes. You can add up to 50 themes per asset group. These are not keywords. They are hints that tell Google what kinds of searches matter to you, like "emergency water heater replacement Roseville."

Brand exclusions and brand controls. Keep your campaign from quietly bidding on competitor names, or from spending to win searches for your own name that you would have gotten for free.

Search term and asset reporting. You can see which queries your campaign actually matched and which headlines, images, and videos are pulling their weight, so the next round of creative is informed instead of hopeful.

Smart Bidding Exploration. Now available for Performance Max campaigns without a product feed, this lets Google test searches with little history while you set how much efficiency you are willing to trade. It wants an unconstrained budget, so it is not for every account.

None of these are set-and-forget. They are levers, and levers only help if someone pulls them. Want a monthly tuning routine instead of a one-time setup? Start your Google Ads strategy with Zora Nova.

How Placer County Businesses Should Use the New Google Ads Tools

The right mix depends on what you sell and how people search for it. Here is how we would approach a few of the industries we work with most.

Contractors and home services. Start with a Search campaign and turn on AI Max for search term matching, keep text customization on, and lock down final URL expansion to your service pages only. Add a Performance Max campaign once you have enough conversions for it to learn from, and load it with real project photos instead of stock. Negative keywords for jobs, salaries, and DIY go in on day one.

Auto repair shops in the Sacramento area. Use channel reporting to confirm Search and Maps are where your leads come from, then shape assets around estimate requests. Promotion mode is a natural fit for seasonal brake, tire, and AC (air conditioning) specials.

Pool plastering and seasonal contractors. Plan a promotion window for spring booking season and pair it with a landing page that shows finished pools and makes the quote request dead simple. Use campaign total budgets to cap spend across the window.

Mortgage brokers and lenders. Go slow. Keep AI Max text customization off until you have reviewed what Google wants to write, since compliance language matters. Brand controls and a strict negative list keep your ads away from searches you can't responsibly serve.

Retail and ecommerce. Promotion mode and Smart Bidding Exploration were built with you in mind. Schedule your holiday pushes now, and make sure your product feed is clean before you ask the AI to find new shoppers.

Professional services and healthcare. Lean on search themes and negative keywords to stay on-intent, and treat channel reporting as a monthly audit of where the budget actually goes.

Across all of them, the rule is the same: give the AI accurate conversion data, honest creative, and clear boundaries, then review the reports every week. Get found by more local customers. Talk to Zora Nova about Google Ads.

Better Google Ads Start with a Better Website

Here is the part no Google announcement will tell you. Every one of these features, from AI Max to promotion mode, is a multiplier. It multiplies whatever you point it at. Point it at a slow, cluttered website with a vague "Submit" button, and you will simply pay more to disappoint more people, faster.

That is why Zora Nova treats Google Ads as a growth layer on top of a solid foundation:

  • A mobile-first website with a clear service page for every campaign and a call to action that says what you want, like "Get Your Free Quote Today"

  • Conversion tracking that counts real leads, not just page views, so Smart Bidding learns from the right signal

  • A Google Business Profile that is complete and accurate, since Performance Max serves on Maps too

  • A CRM (customer relationship management) system that catches every lead and follows up fast, because an ad that generates a call nobody returns is just an expensive ringtone

When that foundation is in place, the new Performance Max and Search controls become a joy to use. You can see where the money goes, tell Google what to avoid, schedule a promotion with an off switch, and let the AI go find customers you would never have thought to target.

If you run a business in Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville, or anywhere in the Greater Sacramento area and your ads feel like a black box, we would love to open it up with you. Launch a lead-focused ad campaign. Schedule a call with Zora Nova.
